I’m a middle-aged woman who hates violent movies and shies away from angry words or, really, any kind of confrontation.
But, I absolutely LOVE football. Go figure!
My love affair began in 1985, living in San Francisco, watching Joe Montana and the 49ers. Of course, I’d watched football before then – didn’t “get” it. What was the fuss all about?
I dated a quarterback in high school. He was cute, and my popularity increased because I was seen with the BMOC, but the football games were for hot dogs, dancing to the band, and dishing about the cheerleaders, not watching the game.
In college I went out with a guy who tried to inspire passion through round pretzels. No, really. He wanted me to understand the game of football, so he pulled out a bag of those small round pretzels (do they make those kind anymore?) and turned the dorm lobby’s old wood table into a football field.
“Here’s the quarterback,” he’d try. “Now this guy on defense will try and get away from the offensive line..” (the pretzels would be moved in position) “and hit the quarterback so he can’t throw the ball.”The guy lost me at “hit.” Any game that worked because one person had to hit another just wasn’t my cup of tea, or in those days, my mug of beer.
But Montana happened, and then Steve Young, and ‘The Catch,’ and 49er fever throughout the Bay Area. I had an ‘aha’ moment, and I began to love football (and its strategy), and to understand the necessity of hits.
Segue to this coming Sunday, with another 49er team suddenly coming from nowhere to the SUPERBOWL, with a new quarterback who astounds pundits with his finesse and running abilities and de-stressed attitude.Where are my pretzels? Where’s my 49er hat and sweatshirt and friends who are fanatic fans like me? We will dance with Michael-Jackson-moves when our team gets a field goal, prance after a touchdown, sing bird tunes with a first down, and groan like sick seals after a sack.
Sack of our quarterback – bad. Sack of the other team’s quarterback – good. Yet both are hits.
The moral of my post is that – hits can be good, if used properly, in football.
Or Blogs.
Roughwighting has been ’hit’ over 10,000 times! Yes, over 10,800 readers have come on over to my blog in the past 1 ½ years to see if I’m quarterbacking a blog worth hitting.
I thank all of you who read my wighting words and enjoy them, who comment when moved, who are touched in some small way from my shared revelations.
Hit me again.
And Go NINERS!
(reblogged and re-edited 8,000 hits later)
Love it! I can’t be doing with confrontation or hitting either but, having watched the film Invictus the other night (where the South African Rugby Team win the World Cup…and it includes some hitting, but Mandela was cheering so…) I think I’m converted – in very specific circumstances. Will I now get hit (the wrong way) for saying American Football and Rugby are similar?!

Thanks for reminding me of that movie – I’ll need to go rent it. Yes, hitting is hitting in sports, yes? Although hockey hitting seems even more violent to me. Rugby is a fabulous game, and yes, I agree that rugby and football are similar. I’m sending you a hug, not a hit.

It scared me for a second when I read “tried to inspire passion through round pretzels”! I must just have a dirty mind, haha. I hope you feel a grain of empathy for us poor Pats fans back East. I will, under the circumstances, be throwing my support behind the 49ers in solidarity with my CA relatives. I don’t watch the hitting, though; mostly the commercials. : )

Oh, you are funnnnny (re round pretzels). This has to be a ‘family-oriented’ blog. :+) I cheered for the Pats all season long, but was worried silly that the Superbowl would be Niners vs Pat. What a dilemma that would be! Thanks for the 49er support – I’ll listen for your rousing cheers.

Well I guess that since I won’t be seeing the Patriots play on Sunday, I’ll have to cheer for the 49ers! (;

Well, when the Packers are playing I might watch. When I’m at my sisters and they put the Vikings on, I have to watch, but then it’s mostly for those closeups of those nice muscular butts and thighs…

See?? I love these positive comments – all good reasons to enjoy football. :+)

It’s because you went to a college with a crappy football team!! 🙂 Living in Alabama, I too have turned into a complete football whack job! So hit that!
BTW, I am halfway through Right Wrong Man and loving it. Is that your mother in this book?

Well, I think there’s some truth to that (no inspiring football during college). Yes, I laugh when I see your enthusiastic football comments on Facebook. Hittin’ you back. :+)
Nope, everyone in my book is totally fictional. So glad you’re enjoying Meredith, Parker, Gregory and the rest of the gang!!!

Football is ok. Marrying Bruce meant adopting the Washington Redskins thru thick and thin. Recently it’s been pretty thin, but this year our rookies made things very exciting and we actually made it into the playoffs!
But, for me it’s BASEBALL! Specifically, the Philadelphia Phillies. The thought that pitchers and catchers report to spring training in less than 2 weeks sets my heart a flutter! I am ready to be taken out to the ballgame! Now that’s what I’m passionate about!
Congrats on authoring such a successful blog! It’s great to have talented friends…

Well, I look forward to seeing your amazing BASEBALL photographs in a few months (talk about talented…). I follow the Redskins too, because of my brother. They had a very exciting season this year. Chuck sends me nasty texts about the 9ers though…I think he’s jealous. :+)

We lived in San Mateo during the glory days of the niners and Joe Montana. It was fun being caught up in that unstoppable team.

Ahh, so you know exactly what I’m talking about. We ran into ‘Joe’ at the airport one time right after a playoff game. My man said I acted like a besotted teenager. :+)

I’m not much for confrontation (I prefer to walk away), but I like football. And I have money in a pool for the Super Bowl, so I’ll be watching. Besides, I love the commercials. Great that you have so many hits! That’s groovy!

I don’t understand the ‘pool,’ but I’m in one too. Good luck to us…and the 9ers.
