Eight Days a Week

The older I get, the more days I want to my week.

Eight days a week would be a great start. I think I’ll call my extra day – WONDER DAY.

One day just to wonder.

The day should most likely come between Wednesday and Thursday.

Once created, civilization will all agree that WONDER Day should not be used for work or worry; nor for doing or wanting.golden retriever, dog running, dog love

Wonder Day should be a day to walk (or run) outside in the early morning.

diner, diner food

Or some may decide to just sit and contemplate choices.

Tatte, desserts, breakfast cafe

We can eat desserts on Wonder Day, and calories won’t count.

lemon, child discovers lemon

We’ll take the sour

lemon, lemon cake, cake, baking

With the sweet.

batter, baking, grandchildren

And even lick the batter!

sunflower, summer

On Wonder Day we’ll smell the flowers and dance with the butterfly.

butterly on flower, butterfly, summer

We’ll hold hands with friends and jump for joy every chance we get. jump for joy, Mt. Tamalpais, S F Bay

At night, we’ll count our lucky moon and stars and sunsets that someone came up with the idea of . . .

WONDER DAY.

How would YOU celebrate Wonder Day?

  1. If only it could happen, if only people, business, everyone agreed not to trade, not to aspire, not to do anything except ‘be’, just as you have so beautifully expounded Pam.

Maybe a more practical first step would be the four-day week. It’s been proven that little productivity would be lost and we’d have an extra day for doing whatever it is makes us happy. The trouble is that many of us have actually forgotten how to channel and enjoy our leisure time properly.

    • Those of us over the age of 50 ‘get’ how beneficial a 4-day week would be. Those under 50 are so enmeshed in the idea of being “on” 24/7 that they would have a difficult time pausing. But we all know what a difference it would make to their life and, in fact, in the life of all.

  2. A great idea. I think we could make every day wonder day if we decided to. Just by finding wonder in everything we do. Or how about creating a wonder hour every day by getting up 1 hour early to do whatever we want. I love your pictures especially licking the batter! Here’s to many wonder days to you and yours!! 😊

  3. I would celebrate Wonder Day just like you. I’d dance in the sunshine, smell the flowers and be mesmerised by butterflies and bees. We can make every day a Wonder Day, if we let ourselves find the precious moments to enjoy.

  4. Dear Pam,

I do love the name Wonder Day. It really gives such an exciting and positive feel.
I do believe a day like that used to be called Sunday. All shops were closed, families went out together, so many fun things were given time.
So Wonder day is necessary when we took away Sunday and made it commercial.
Yes to many Wonder Days. 💕

    • Those of us “old” enough do remember when Sundays were a day to.. just wonder, whether in a church setting or on a family walk in nature or sitting at home with a good book. I live in Henry David Thoreau territory, where he discovered the 8th day of wonder every day of the week. I’m going to hike around Walden Pond this weekend and soak up his inspiration. ❤

      • Wow, 4 day week! We had a 5 day week. I checked and the English Sunday trading laws came 1994. Several countries in Europe were later.
8th day of wonder sounds a brilliant idea. 💕

  5. Every once in a while I take some kids I know on a “Wonder Walk.” It has two purposes: to wonder about things and the appreciate how “wonder”ful other things are. A simple walk ANYWHERE leads us to look closely at things we wouldn’t notice otherwise and to really think about how much we know about them. And we look at other things and take some time that we wouldn’t otherwise to be grateful for them. A “wonder”ful practice. 🙂

    • Oh my, I think your WONDER walk should be practiced in every school in the nation, not as an extracurricular activity, but as a “MUST DO” part of school. Could you imagine how, if we start them young, the idea of WONDER day could change the world? Thanks for your WONDERful comment, Arlene.

  6. Hi Pam! Great idea. I would do a lot of what you suggest – I think taking the time to retreat from all the pressures we put on ourselves and escaping from technology and just going outside would be tops on my list. The door to the 8th day is out there!

    • Maybe we’re starting to open that door to WONDER Day a bit more as we proclaim it to the world. We’ll tweet it and put it out there in social media (where so many are placing their attention instead of out there in nature). The WONDER revolution has begun! ❤

  7. I’m in, Pam! It sounds wonderful! 🙂
I would take some time to just sit and read a book without worrying about other things I should be doing–as well as all that other stuff. I like the calories not counting. I think maybe we’d have some mother-daughter cooking and baking and wine drinking.

  8. I read this just before walking into work today, Pam. You injected wander into my day that I was dreading. I’m going to follow your example and start having a wonder day in every week. This will be easier for me when I start my retirement in early November. Thank you for this beautiful post today!

  9. I love this idea of Wonder Day. In order to fit in the week, we can spell it like the others, Wonderday. Thank you for bringing me on a whimsical journey in my mind. 🙂 Have a nice weekend.

        • Yes, totally. This morning my guy and I watched the squirrel watch us as she contemplated jumping on the bird feeder (again). The intellect and humor in those eyes! I’m not kidding you. It was a wonder. (And she knows exactly how long to wait until we go back into the house to jump onto that hanging birdfeeder – a feat in and of itself.) 🙂

  10. What a delightful idea and post Pam. Thank you for reminding us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty around us. I used to spend more time in wonder, often on Sundays or when I go in nature. I will happily join the wonder parade. Thanks for leading! 🙂

    • Perhaps you could teach me a bit about sketching. I think I’d really enjoy it, but have been intimidated by the idea of creating “art” my entire life…. so far. I’d love to do that with you on our WONDER Day.

  11. out of the ballpark – again – Pam. At this stage of the game I think a good part of my Wonder Days would be spent wandering about, a gift I have not properly or fully appreciated until retirement and disability. When I wander about I’m quite open to the wonders! It might be fun to make one of the 7 days a Wonder Day and committing to better management of the other 6 days by controlling the ‘shoulds, the ‘musts’ while carefully taking stock of our hearts minds bodies & spirits …. just saying

    • Your suggestion would be the best one, Doug. Think we could persuade the millenniums (and our grandkids) to put away ALL instruments of mass distraction away for a day? That would be a miracle for the ages. Just sayin’.

    • You create a perfect WONDER day here, Barbara. Long walk, curl up with a good book, be served a healthy delicious dinner, then star gazing. Can’t get much more wondrous than that. Let’s make it happen.

  12. I think you’ve just about covered every delight that could be fit into one day! Wonder Day is a fabulous idea. I may have to call it Tuesday or Wednesday, but I think it could be attainable with a few adjustments! 🙂

  13. Beautiful post and idea Pam, and I feel a little guilty or not. 🙂 for now I have retired, every day is WONDER Day…. I wounder each morning what I should do.. Should I garden, should I paint. I wonder about often, walking, and smelling the roses.. 🙂
    I am lucky… VERY Lucky..
But then I had over 38 years of full time employment, being a busy housewife and mother of two.. And to fit a Wonder day in between a working week, would have been my idea of heaven…

    Loved reading this Pam..
Enjoy every Moment of every Day Pam..
LOVE and Light my friend ❤ ❤ ❤

  14. Oh my this is such a hard decision. I think I could spend time with morning tea and a really good boo and then maybe walk in the woods with my camera and finish it off again with tea and my
Little ones. That would be the perfect day. Absolutely no chores.

  15. Well, I would not want another day to be added in my week because technically that would reduce the number of years or months I live. However, it is always good to take a break from work and disappear out of the technology realm. I think that is what most people want. Disappear. Escape. Vanish. We are so bored of this hectic life, pampering to family needs, managing the nagging boss and clients, trying to live up to the expectations of others and trying to create a false happy image on social media. Do you ever take a break where you just escape into a technology-less world? I do at least once a year and it is so helpful. The only technology I carry along is my camera and the phone, of course, for emergencies. However, I don’t answer to any work emails or calls.

    • Ah, you have an engineer mind, Sharukh. I don’t want to reduce any of our time here on this dimension, so no taking away days – that’s why we create EIGHT days a week! We add one, just for WONDER. I’m so impressed with your ability to take a break from all technology at least once a year. I’m working on that. If everyone did it, we’d have a lot more happy people in this world.

      • I think once a year holiday is not a big deal, if you can work on your schedule. I am hooked to my laptop all the time and therefore it offers me a great experience to not be in front of my laptop for few days. I and Sarah recently went to Udaipur and we explored the city like nobody ever did.

  16. I love your idea of a wonder day, and I do like the idea of it falling between Wednesday and Thursday, on that downhill moment on the way to the weekend. That moment so many of us dream for the weekend and all thigns fun. Not for doing and not for wanting…then that will probably release us from all the bad stresses in the world and we can just be. Wonder the days away 🙂

    • That’s what I think, Mabel. Generally people dread Wednesdays – the middle of the week and so much more to do/accomplish/worry about. But if we all knew that after Wednesday came WONDER Day….well, suddenly Wednesday would be a day of great pleasure, knowing that soon, all worries/cares/stresses would be released on the next day. ❤

    • Haha. You’re funny, Judith. I think WONDER Day can be whatever you want. If it’s sleeping, then go for it, for the dreams you’ll have will add to your creativity on Wednesdays and Thursdays. 🙂

  17. This is a great suggestion—I’m in! I’d use this very special day to sleep in a bit longer (but not too long), meditate, go for a stroll instead of my usual ‘fast walk’, and let me think..Oh, I think I’d have me some avocado toast! Happy Wonder day Pam—you wonderfully creative person, you!

  18. Haha you remind me of my father who years back one day said ” there should be a day when everyone rests”… and I looked at him and said, um well, someone already invented that dad. It’s called the Sabbath”

But for Wonderday I would have a day like today…. A fruit smoothie bowl for breakfast, a massage, a swim in the ocean, and a swim with a giant turtle. But actually while we are at it… couldn’t every day be Wonder Day??

  19. Oh I just LOVE the idea of Wonder Day! I would celebrate it by baking a new cake from a new recipe, turning off my mobile and computer, take down all the clocks and remove my watch, invite friends over for tea and cake, and we would chat – properly chat. Then, I’d go for a walk, alone in nature, and just wander, no plan pr destination, just walk around for a bit until I wanted to come home again. Oh PLEASE let’s properly invent it!!! Loadsa love and blessings of wild wonder, Harula xxx

  21. Pam, first your post has me smiling, in wonder and awe at the idea, the possibilities emerging. Then reading your comments I see how you’ve opened up the flood gates to wonder in our lives, how we seek it, crave it, hopefully find it here and there, treasure the nuggets of wonder! This morning I had the wonder of a coal tit tilting its head hello as it sat in the balustrade outside the window, laughed how a friend saw the ‘mystic mysterious light’ in a grey drizzly day, enjoying the gentle free fall of birch leaves in the breeze, their final dance of joy … as you maybe can tell, I’m in Sweden for a few days and able to relax and savour the world around me. The 8th day of wonder should be a day of no-musts, no plans … just being! Hugs ❤️

    • I was blown away by how many people are ready for/need a WONDER Day, Annika. But it should be no surprise. Life is too full most times to see the “mystic mysterious light” like your friend did. Good for her. May be all search for the wonder of that light (even on gray days) every day. Hope you’re having a terrific break in Sweden. xo

  22. Look at all these comments, Pam. You are a wonder! Aaaah, yes, an eighth day just to wonder, notice, relax, and enjoy. It would be hard to enforce since people struggle to slow down enough to wonder. We’d have to have wonder-police. 🙂 What would I do? Take walks for sure, also lie in my hammock and look up at the trees. I’d go somewhere I’d never been, and then I’d read. 🙂

    • The WONDER police – haha. Their main job would be to hand out cookies and point the way to the nearest hammock, right? 🙂 I know you’re in the middle of much, with little time to relax, yet I also know that you have the ability to see WONDER just by closing your eyes, Diana.
