Are you an introvert or an extrovert or in between? In the “old days,” being an introvert meant you were shy and socially awkward. Most people who know me would say “Pam? No way.”
A psychology professor at Pepperdine University, Cindy Miller-Perrin, explains that “Shyness reflects an anxiety or discomfort associated with social situations, but introversion is really just a preference.”
Exactly. I prefer to be by myself for large stretches of time. I’m a writer, after all. But I also love meeting friends for lunch or a long walk.
Extroverts, on the other hand, “tend to be more comfortable with bigger groups and more likely to find enjoyment in engaging in lots of social activities,” according to Miller-Perrin.
I think an extrovert enjoys going to cocktail parties and events with lots of people they don’t know. I don’t think extroverts feel comfortable sitting at their writing table for hours making up stories or, even worse, writing TRUE stories about themselves and their loved ones. And then publishing those stories.
Me? I love writing “real-life” stories. I love it so much I’ve gathered them in a book and entitled it Flashes of Life.
Basically, I’m sharing my beating heart and tender soul to the reading world.
An extrovert flinches at the idea of soul-baring.
BUT, I flinch at the idea that I now have to shout to the world: MY BOOK IS PUBLISHED! Please buy and enjoy.
Extroverts would be selling their book on street corners, grocery store parking lots, dinner parties, and any bookstore that would accept their frantic knocks on the door.
Me? Cowering in the corner, whispering, “my book is available now.”
But (extroverted) readers who pre-ordered and read my book are shouting out to friends: BUY THIS BOOK:
“Your writing style is so easy to read and it makes me laugh and cry sometimes at the same time. You really are a gifted writer …I will recommend it to everyone and give it as a gift to many friends!” Judy, owner of a fitness studio
“I am so loving your book! It’s hard to put it down. It’s beautifully written, of course, but the content grabs your heart and won’t let go. I wish I had met your Mom. What a personality! And so much love between you…Thanks for sharing these wonderful stories with us!” Dianne, museum tour guide
There are more. But I’m too introverted to share them. My Pub Date was May 15. I’m late for my party, but here’s the link to Amazon for the paperback (click here).
And the paperback and .epub version for iPad, phone, or computer is available through Borgo Publishing.(click here).
Okay I’m slinking back in my writing corner.
What about you? Are you first to the party, or last?
Congratulations on your new book. I´m sure it will be a hit. I´m a rare writer who is an extrovert. Myers-Briggs describes extroverts as people who get their energy from being around people, making new friends and being busy. I go to a party, come home and want to clean my house from top to bottom. I know, weird!

I’m shy and definitely more of an introvert. I like small gatherings of friends, not big parties, especially if I don’t know anyone. I’m always happy to be at a party with one particular friend where we can find a quiet corner and talk–and early on I told her if we sat by the food, people would come to us, so we wouldn’t have to mingle. 😏

What a smart introvert you are! I was surprised when I thought about my friends and realized how much more outgoing they are than I. They help me at parties and get-togethers. One even has offered to go to bookstores and gift shops and show them my new book! 😳🤭I could never do that.

First, congratulations on your new book. Of course, I’m going to order it as I enjoy your writing so much. I can identify with so many of your comments about being introverted or extroverted. I’m somewhere in the middle. I like my privacy, yet the pandemic drove me crazy, not being around my friends. I missed breaking bread with a friend, a few laughs with buddies over a beer, the hugs—God did I miss the hugs, traveling, etc…

I also like to think of introverts as those who like to process things internally, before they share publicly. Extroverts like to talk. I was always in between, until an injury made socializing more challenging. So I’m perfectly comfortable with being with myself and choosing what I do publicly.

I’m not socially awkward yet I have no problem being on my own – wasn’t always the case, mind you. I’m comfortable in large gatherings though I am now at the point where I get tired of the over-exuberance… Can one be a reformed extrovert? A balanced mix of the two? 😀

“A reformed extrovert” – now that’s a new one and made me laugh out loud. Nothing wrong with being an extrovert nor an introvert. My publisher says that readers should be able to open the epub doc on their phone, iPad, or computer. It is not compatible with the Kindle, though. I looked up Kobo and saw this: How do I put ePub files on my Kobo?
Click Files near the top of the screen. Drag and drop the ePub or PDF file over the Kobo Books icon. Kobo Books app. Under ‘Recently Added’, you’ll see the book that you added.
Because of the format of the book, the publisher had to use the .epub format. Me? Waaaayyyy over my head. ;-0

Oh, Diana. this is the part that is so hard! My publisher is having a difficult time getting the .mobi version on KDP for the Kindle. That’s what we get for doing a unique design (which I love). So she’s got the book as an .epub which seems to work for those with ipads and computers and phones. I’m working on seeing if I can have a (non-designed) format made for the Kindle. Tearing hair out a bit. Fortunately I have a lot of hair (so far). 🙂

I think I’m definitely more aligned with the idea of an ambivert, since I suppose I can be really loud and outgoing when I’m with my regular friends, but really quiet and shy when with people I don’t know. There’s definitely more than 2 sides to it though, I think that’s for sure. Great post, looking forward to more

What a good question. My publisher Borgo publishing has an EPUB version you can download from her site. A regular Kindle version is very difficult because this is a .mobi format. (Maybe that makes sense you – it doesn’t really to me.) But I guess KDP has a difficult time with.mobi. To be continued… 🧐😕

Hmm…I know that KDP has just stepped away from .mobi to epub but it should be easy enough to convert your original document to epub using Calibre. Or probably Scrivener if that’s easier to work with. Both Scrivener and Storybox output to .epub as far as I know. Please ask them to make the conversion because otherwise you’re going to miss out on a lot of readers. 😦

I totally agree with what you say about not boxing us in as either introvert or extrovert or any other category. Your question is timely because I went to a wedding of a friend last night. I am definitely an introvert although I can seem social when I am very comfortable, etc. I sat at a table with the other cat people (volunteers at the animal shelter where my friend had been director of cats), all introverts (except the bride). So we had fun with our group, but I wasn’t out there being the life of the party!

I’m an extravert most of the time – but, like you, I can also enjoy my time alone to write … and one thing I don’t like doing is self-promote. That is so hard. Meanwhile, congratulations to you on the book … and cheers for being able to do self-promotion!

I’m surprised, Frank. Because of your love of walking alone on the beach, I would have pegged you for a functional introvert. 🙂 Goes to show that there’s a bit of both in all of us. As far as self-promotion, ye gad, this was hard. I’m looking forward to just …. writing my stories from now on. ❤

Congrats! I remember saying you were going to write this book and now you have! I so agree that introversion is really just a preference. Would that more people understood that reality.

Many congratulations Pam, I’ve added it to my to buy list and I’ll look forward to reading it! I’m definitely in the introvert camp so I can understand how hard promoting your book must be!

Yes, somehow from the beautiful words and stories you create in your blog, I can tell you’re an introvert. I think those who are introverted are those who stop and notice all that is around them. ❤

I’m with you – I enjoy being sociable, but also being alone, which is most of the time. I think those that write often fall into that category. And hearty congratulations on your book!!

Pam, congratulations on your new book. I find the theory that introversion is a choice. Having raised three children I am not so sure I agree with that. My take is that people are hard wired either way with most of us falling in the middle.

Interesting theory – and most likely entirely correct. Moms are the ones who REALLY now what’s what. ❤

Oh, thanks so much for reading my book, Ann. If you’re comfortable writing a review on Amazon or Goodreads, I would highly appreciate it. Thanks for visiting with me here. – we who are shy and/or introverted are the opposite of “losers”; we’re thinkers and writers and poets. All good. Good luck with your blog! You may want to add an “About” page so your readers will know a bit about who you are, where you live, etc., then they’ll go on to read your blog posts.

I seem to always be a day late and a dollar short as my dad always said. I downloaded the book but can’t seem to get the format reader friendly. I’ll wait till this weekend and have my daughter give me a hand. I’m looking forward to reading it. I’m an extroverted introvert. I love people and conversations, learning new things from each person I talk with but each exchange costs me so much energy that I feel completely drained afterward. I’m perfectly comfortable with a lot of alone time but need others around for more enriching mental stimulation. Who I spend time with makes a huge difference in the cost. Intelligent people are much less draining than those that want to discuss their ails all day. Learning something new is energizing. I prefer parties of 5 or 6 rather than 20 or 30. I’ll be on time for the party and stay late to clean up with you.

Please let me know if you can download the .epub okay. The publisher says the .epub doc works on your phone, iPad, or computer. I have it on my phone on the Apple books app, and it shows great there. But I must admit, it’s so much better in the real softback. ;-0 Your daughter can Google “how to read an .epub book on your device” and there are lots of options.
I completely bond with your way of being an extroverted introvert. You describe how I feel exactly. When I’m with a group of people who talk …. fluff… for a long time I come home totally exhausted. People energize me who delve into fascinating conversations and shared ideas/philosophies. But then I need time alone to decompress. 🙂 I’d so love to have you over for a small party (5? 6? people) – our fellow bloggers from around the world. ❤

I’ll have my daughter check that link. I do not have an iphone or Apple product. That may be the problem. They often don’t integrate with androids. 🙂 Just keep writing those wonderful stories. Hugs.

Yes! Look at all the support you’ve gotten here, Pam. I love the way you “tell a story” whether the story is real life or fiction. I can’t wait to sit back and read this.
I’m an introvert by the old definition. When I was taking psychology back in the 1980s my professors described introverts as able to take what they needed from within, to feed themselves. While extraverts needed others for that kind of fuel. But a former boss (now friend) was gobsmacked when I told him that I’m an introvert. He thinks I’m the total people person. “Didn’t you know I was faking it?” I asked. I can pretend to be an extravert when I absolutely have to, but I most certainly am not… I wish I were. But I’m not. LOL.
Wishing you huge success. I’m sharing this everywhere. Hugs on the wing.

Yes we introverts can be good at faking it and acting like we are extroverts. But it sure sucks up so much of our energy to do so! That said, I definitely get energized by the wonderful people that I am around in the classes I teach and with my friends and family. But then I love crawling back into my little home cave ! I admit there are times I am out with people and I think to myself -“I can’t wait to go home and pick up a good book.” So enjoying your latest journey series Teagan. Hats off to your creativity. 🧢

I think that Extroverts speak, while introverts write. That’s the only difference!

The .epub version is available from my publisher. It’s good for ipad, tablets, computer and phone but not the Kindle. :-0 I’m working on that – because of the book’s unique design, it’s not an easy “do.” Sigh. But we writers persevere, do we not? 🙂

I’m enjoying your book ,Pammie! I think it can be tough on intro/extro’s to figure out just where we fit in but who really cares? It’s fun to be be both when life’s too short to be stuck and no one ever knows which one of me will show up!!! We’ve been getting to know bits and pieces of each other and now I have an edge up because I’ve “looked” in your mirror!

When I was younger I always wanted to go to all the parties. Never had an invite or when I did I was working. Is it possible to be an awkward and shy extrovert? Now that I’m older and know me better I’ve found they don’t have my type of parties and I don’t have the money or connections to host them.
Party of 1 lost in the dark sea of a fantastical unreality.

Hi Erica. Thanks for stopping here and commenting. So many of us are confused about where we fit in: shy? extroverted but awkward? Introverted but friendly? I know that it takes effort to go to the party and not escape for the exit too quickly. 🙂 I found a way to get to your blog post but couldn’t comment.

Thank you. You may be the second or third that have notified me on the commenting issue. Yay. It’s officially a problem. Something else to figure out. Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Time may have made me an introvert by circumstance.
