“Photographers are writers- Writers are photographers: we catch a glimpse of something beautiful - a flower, a glance, a window - and catch it into our camera or writing lens: add a bit of glimmer, a ghost of shadow, allowing the background to sink into fuzziness while focusing on the sharp beauty; thus, we highlight the romance of life.” Pamela Wight

writing, reading, across the universe, joy, beach, ocean

Words are flowing out like
Endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe.
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
Are drifting through my opened mind
Possessing and caressing me. (lyrics by the Beatles)

CREATIVITY

Cripes, I need to create a

Ripe and fully-formed character who

Even burps on the page, or who eats

An apple with its core, or who

Talks in half sentences, like a brother-

In-law, or another relative the reader

Vividly connects with so the pages are

Inhaled, enjoyed, so engrossing

That the story is passed to

You and you and you.

  1. Stephen King’s remark above recalls the best workshop I’ve ever attended at Wesleyan (CT). Keynote speaker was Joyce Carol Oates. The theme of her talk basically was that all art begins in play. That was in 1988. I’ve tried ever since not to take myself too seriously. Nowadays I can tell on reading old stuff that Stephen King got it right, as did Joyce. If only it were easier to do! I have a notion you know the secret, just from what I read by a “roughwighter.”

I give up–I know what a wight is, but a wighter?

    • Stephen King’s book on writing is inspirational and helpful in a non-bossy way. Interesting about J. C. Oates – her work is so intense!

Yes, we must play with our words! And watch our life and its inhabitants with a wry funny eye. Makes for fun reading!

  2. I LOVE Stephen Kings’ book On Writing He is a brilliant author! I don’t care for most of his genre but I loved 1963 and Dumas Key ….his Tower series not so much. I somehow got through the first book but it was painful 😦

    • King knows how to write, because he knows how to scare just with words! But I’m with you, I enjoyed On Writing most of all. Of his fiction, I think it’s The Stand that I enjoyed the most (but many of his books I did not read because of that fright!).

      • Exactly…that is why I do not read his horror stuff. But 1963 isn’t horror at all. It was about a guy going back in time to prevent the assassination of JFK. It was awesome! I highly recommend it! 🙂

    • I think Stephen King is an excellent writer, although he’s so good, I can’t read all of his horror. (I like to sleep at night!) I shouldn’t be surprised that he also wrote an excellent book about writing. If you haven’t read it – do so. He includes terrific writing advice with humor.

  3. What a fantastic collection of amazing quotes! “On Writing” has been sitting on my book shelf staring at me for far longer than I’d like to admit! I’ve read bits and pieces, but need to buckle down and read the whole thing! 🙂
