I beg Murial for her mysterious cookie recipe. I asked her five years ago, four years ago, three, two and now. Now, I ask her again as I take a small bite of this delicious, delectable cookie.
I feel light, airy, almost otherworldly, which makes no sense. It’s only a cookie.
Murial widens her large hazel eyes as if surprised. “What? This little cookie? You want the recipe for it?”
I sigh. Muriel is 94. She’s as tiny as an elf, and as mischievous as one. “Mur, I’ve asked you a bazillion times. You keep deflecting. Why?”
“Ah, I understand,” says the diminutive sprite of a woman, picking up the platter of small round cookies dotted with what appears to be gold-yellow sprinkles.
“Don’t take them away,” I nearly shout. “I want another one!”
Muriel smiles. “Just follow me for the secret ingredient. You’re right. I’m not getting any younger. I shouldn’t die and take the ‘mysterious cookie recipe’ to my grave.”
I blush. “I didn’t mean . . .” I begin.
She laughs softly. “I know. And no grave for me anyway. Let me blow in the wind and add my Spirit to the Universe. Come on.”
I follow Muriel outside to her small garden that should be almost gone to seed as winter approaches. But it seems to vibrate in golden tones.
“So, the usuals,” she lists nonchalantly, “butter, sugar, a dash of salt, vanilla and then.” Murial points to a golden flower swaying in the corner of the garden.
“Stardust,” she whispers back. “This flower never dies, even in the dead of winter. In your cookie dough, sprinkle some of the pistil from the flower. You’ll be in heaven.”

Pam, a beautiful and tender story! Muriel sounds quite a character and I feel as if she has been spreading that stardust throughout her life – and not just on the cookies! 💕

YES, may we all add that ingredient in some way in our lives, Beth. So true. But including a cookie or two along the way doesn’t hurt. 🙂

I hadn’t realized that truism. We only share secret ingredients with special people in our lives. I’ll include one of my special cookie recipes if you give us one of yours…. (unfortunately, mine does not include stardust).

Aw, come on, Marian. I keep hoping for some good cookie recipes to try. YOU, of all people, must have some special/favorite ones. Yes, I think when we put a lot of love into our baking, we put a spell on the cookie recipient. ❤

At the moment, I’m reading Alice Hoffman’s Survival Lessons and in it she prints a stellar (she says) brownie recipe on page 17. My mother had a wonderful date and nut cookie, but I don’t have time to look for it now–6 guests are coming for pizza night. 😀

OK, I guess I better read Hoffman‘s survival lessons. I wanted to get to it anyway. I attended talk that she did about a year ago in Cambridge and she is an excellent speaker as well as writer.

I love this story. Stardust is a new ingredient to me. Have never heard of that one. 🙂 Sounds delicious. I got a secret recipe for banana bread from the first MIL. Gave it to my DIL. She changed it so much I can’t eat it. Maybe I should find her some stardust too.

Changing a recipe takes away the magic, every time. :-0
A friend across the country who reads my posts texted me that she was rushing to the grocery store to look for that ingredient. Wouldn’t that be fun, to find a bottle of “stardust” in the grocery aisle?

If she finds it, have her tell us all where to find it. 🙂 I can only add love to my baking and I only bake when I feel the love for those I’m baking. It just doesn’t taste the same.

Muriel’s recipe reminded me of a song that used to be very, very popular, with lyrics that went:
“We are stardust,
We are golden,
And we’ve got to get ourselves
Back to the garden…”
I wonder if she found her recipe at Woodstock?

I love that song and sing it in my head often. Yes, perfect for this post. I wish I’d included a YouTube of it! I just read that Joni Mitchell wrote the song, but Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young sang it (beautifully).
