I can communicate with animals.
Last night I spoke with Violet, one of my grand-dogs, and asked silently, “Do you really like that canned pumpkin I gave you last night with your dinner?”
She stared back with liquid pools of brown love: “Anything you give me is full of love, and how can love not taste divine?”
I was stunned.
I wasn’t surprised that I’d heard Violet’s words as clearly as a train whistle, or a foghorn, or a hummingbird’s wings. Her words have rung loudly other times, although I admit the phenomenon is rare.
Most times I feel her answer and those of other close companions. If you’ve never communicated with an animal, you don’t know what I mean. But some dog or cat lovers are nodding their heads.
We humans usually don’t like to admit that there’s a language bond between species, probably because humans own the ridiculous assumption that we’re superior to every other being.
No, I wasn’t shocked because Violet answered me but instead taken aback by her words.
DIVINE.
Food and love, giving and receiving, cooking and eating, all are part of the Divine. With a capital D.
I raced to the kitchen, where earlier I’d placed a Meyer lemon from a friend’s garden. Violet watched me, knowingly.
I started measuring sugar, cracking eggs, pouring flour into a bowl, turning the mixer at full speed, then allowing Violet to lick the beater as her special treat.
Lemon bars. Cooling now on the rack, ready to share with others.
Combine: 2 beaten eggs, 1 c sugar, 2 Tbl lemon juice and grated rind of 1 lemon. Pour over hot dough, bake 20 minutes more. When cool, sprinkle with powdered sugar.

I believe the verbal and nonverbal communications between humans and their peers especially dogs, Pam! I’m sure Violet understands you just right. Your divine recipe is Divine! 😍

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, including the furry ones!

“Divine” is used in many different ways, I suppose. My aunt used to sigh, “Isn’t this divine?” about a new dress … or a good meal. I suppose I use the word in several different ways. Looking out my window as I type this, I see the “Divine.” ❤

Divine is not a word I’d use, but I understand completely about communicating with animals. They certainly understand love. 💙

I’m not sure I’d say the critters understand language, but they certainly have reasoning skills, memory, and a sense about the people they come in contact with. I visited a dog (and his family) this weekend, and after a year of not seeing me, it was clear that he recognized my car as I came in the drive, and remembered me when I stepped out. Call it what you will, but it’s great fun!

The lemon bars look divine! Thanks. I communicate with my dogs all the time. Dot is more likely to answer than Lia. Dot is more introspective whereas Lia is more goofy. But all species understand the words of love. Have a super Thanksgiving!

That’s another good point, Darlene. Just like humans, dogs have different personalities. Probably why Dot and Lia get along so well. Ying and Yang. 🙂

I’m late in my reply, but not in my thanks for your comment. I love the name for your cockapoo. 🙂 I’d love to have a cockapoo; I grew up with a cocker spaniel, Freddy. He taught me right away (starting as a baby) about doggy love.

Bear inherited his Papa’s cocker spaniel size while the rest of the litter were miniature poodles like the Mom. l like the name Freddy for your spaniel. Bear had big navy button eyes under his fringe of hair and was always up for cuddles.

I so agree, Pam. I find myself talking to my son’s cat who is living with me until he finishes his contract in another province (read: my cat now). And I used to speak to Zeke all the time. I swear he could understand and I could feel his responses.
This is a wonderful post! Lemon bars, eh?
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Ah yes. Divine! And we communicate so easily with animals of all sorts (domesticated and wild) if we stop “doing” and start “being” and paying attention. Beautiful photos of your four-footed friends, Pam. I think they have it all figured out, and we’d be much wiser if we took the time to learn from them. 🙂

SO TRUE!! I wonder if animals ever, secretly, make fun of humans who think they know it all, and usually know so little. Here’s to learning and listening and watching the animals all around us. My friend and I walk pass a house often that has a chicken coop, and we can tell the sweet ones, the ornery ones, and the ones who just want to be left alone. 🙂

Once, when I sat on my front porch early early on a summer morning (before anyone else was out in the neighborhood), a deer came out of the nearby woods and stopped in front of me about 10 yards away. Divine is exactly the right word to use. You are getting the abridged comment because, once again, WP doesn’t want me to leave a comment. They are happiest if I forget to copy the comment before I hit send. You are 100% correct. We can hear animals and they do understand us. They come from a level of the Angelic realm. Angels without wings. I always gave my mother’s dog pumpkin too and she was grateful because it helped her.

Hi Marlene. Yes, I always “try” to remember to copy a comment before I send, because once in while it gets lost in the WP netherland. Thanks for your patience and persistence. I wasn’t surprised when I was a young teen and a teacher told me, “you know, DOG is GOD spelled backwards.” Aha! I thought, that explains it. At the time my family had rescued a dog, Susie Q, and she was my constant companion and helped me through teen angst. And lastly, yes, our dog’s doc recommended the pumpkin. Good stuff. Perhaps I should be eating more pumpkin pie. ;-0 🙂
