When I bounced on my great-grandmother’s knee as a 1-year-old, she told me about the legend. She repeated it often; by the time I was 5, the story trickled into my psyche.
At that age, magic is still possible, so the idea that every 100 years a magical snowflake grants a wish to the person who finds it became fact in my mind.
Great-Nana was a rare spirit – she never aged, at least not to me. Until the day of her death at age 98 she was a vibrant busy bee who buzzed from person to person sucking up their personal stories.
By the time I was 20 she regaled me with so many tales I knew that when I “grew up,” I’d be a novelist. But the first fable she shared with me was the story I most believed – a magical snowflake with eight points that granted a wish once a century.
By that age, I knew that snowflakes had six points because water molecules naturally form six-sided (hexagonal) patterns when they freeze into ice. But that didn’t matter – with magic.
So here I am now on a cold winter morning staring into a toy store window, agape. Swaying down from the ceiling of the store on a thin thread is a large snowflake made of white crepe with eight points in an unbelievably gorgeous star-like pattern.
This is it! This is the magical snowflake. I just know it.
At 28 years of age, I’ve been out of college for seven years, out of three bad relationships, and in between teaching jobs. My manuscript landed with four different agents who have received not one bite from an editor or publisher.
So, you know what I’m going to wish, don’t you?
I grab the door handle and stride into the toy-packed tall-ceiled shop. I raise my head toward the hanging floating paper snowflake and yell, “I wish my book is published and sells one million copies!”
Just look at the New York Times best-selling list.
Once every 100 years! And you used it so the rest of us will have to wait. 😉

Sorry ’bout that. But maybe it’s true for each country, and that snowflake hasn’t been found in Spain yet ….????

There is something magical in “real” life when it snows. I just wish it would magically disappear the next day. 😌

I do love the quiet when it first snows, especially early in the morning when no one is out. It is magical. And I agree, disappearing the next day would be wonderful. 😊

Ha! Is that called a paradox? Not believing in magic but always looking for it? I find that the more I focus on the ordinary, the more magic I find. ☺️❄️

An amazing grandmother with a magical snowflake—wow! The eight-pointed flake made the story seem even more fanciful. Magic is everywhee in your stories. Thanks, Pam!

I can’t seem to escape the magic, Marian. 🤷♀️ It seems to follow my pen. Hope you’re warm there in cold FL with no surprise magical snow flurries. ❄️

No flurries, and weather improving–not magic, but a welcome change!

What a great story about the magical snowflake, Pam! I should have checked for some 8-pointers last weekend when we got buried in snow!

Laughing. I know, we got two feet as well. But the snow came down too fast to check out the 8-pointed one. 🙂

Thanks, Beth. One of the benefits of being young (like your students) is still believing in magic. May we all keep that youthfulness within us.

This is what I call a magical story!!! I do love to see some snow, but we just came through an ice storm in Virginia. We still have ice on the ground one week later. I loved your story!

Ice storms are scary, Linda. Here, we got two feet of snow, and everyone is worried about ice dams. “Dam” winter. But then again, winter brings magical snowflakes. 🙂

Pam, you do know you are single-handedly responsible for having us all out on snowy days looking for that magical snowflake! 😀😀 A wonderful and heartwarming story – Great-grandparents have that otherworldly quality about them which seem in exact sync with younger minds and souls! Here’s to a bit of magic – always! xx ❤️

All that said, I don’t wish this kind of snowfall on you (we have over two feet). But …. for a snowflake magical wish, the cold and discomfort of walking through two feet of snow to feed the birds is worth it. 😉

I agree – from the start there’s something magical about grannies – great or grand as you say. I’m doing my best to be a good grand – I sprinkle (magical) sprinkles in my grandkids’ chocolate chip cookies. 🙂

Maybe I’m different when it comes to magic. I’ve learned over the years that when you let go of the outcome, (put the manuscript on the alter of it was fun but out of my hands) the magic gets to do it’s thing. I see it all the time. I believe. Loved this story.

Oh, how I wish, Jennie. Wish upon a snowflake (hmm, maybe we could change the ‘star’ song a bit). The character ( I ) in this story isn’t me, but perhaps it is me in another timeline. THAT’S when I become a bestselling author. Ha. Actually, that is not my dream or wish. It’s that I write stories that readers enjoy, and in that, I think I’m successful. ❤

I love magical thinking, and this is a perfect story. What I wondered was if … maybe … you had channeled someone who is on the NYTimes best seller list now. Maybe Katherine Applegate with Pocket Bear (and previously The One and Only Ivan. ??

Hmmm, I don’t know that author/book. Perhaps they were channeling ME!! 🙂

I don’t know Pocket Bear yet, but Katherine Applegate wrote The One and Only Ivan (based on a real gorilla who was a roadside attraction off a big highway), The One and Only Bob, Wishtree, and others. If she was channeling you, then you are doing really well!!!
